Profile

The Unfunny Truth about Scientology is a YTMND that is critical in the investigation of Scientology. Part of the Unfunny Truth fad, it was created on June 13, 2006 at 11:01PM by smoothmedia in response to the legal threats the Church of Scientology launched towards YTMND.com earlier that month.

Scientology has become a popular Internet meme by being disseminated by YTMND users, among others, in an effort to spread the word about what they see as the dangers and cult status of the Church, and its continued campaign to use underhanded legal attacks to bully their opponents into silence.

Many YTMND users have attempted to create a Google bombing campaign, meant to link the site to the phrase "Scientology", should it be typed in the Google search engine. The Unfunny Truth about Scientology is present on the second page of Google results as of 9/11/10.

The site spread on the Internet quite fast. On June 17th, Anthony Walter posted the site on his website CodeBot. Walter worked with the Lisa McPherson Trust while researching Scientology in Clearwater, Florida. He then submitted his article to Digg, a user powered news site. It became the highest viewed story of the week. Two days later, his hosting company Verio Inc. replaced the codebot website with a cease and desist memo sent to Verio by the Church of Scientology's legal department. As of June 25th, 2006, going to the CodeBot site redirected the user to the Church of Scientology's web site. Gregory Beck of the Public Citizen Litigation Group offered to defend CodeBot against the Church of Scientology, and as of the 27th of June, CodeBot is back online with the Scientology article.
