The "fails at life" fad was one of ytmnd's late fads in 2004. The original "fail at life" site showed a person cosplaying as Cloud Strife, but the site was deleted in 2005 when accounts were deleted for upvoting/downvoting. The soundfile used was the "fail" music from The Price is Right when a person loses a game.

After the original "fail at life" site, many followed at a high rate. Most of the sites required little effort and recieved low ratings, but nonetheless, others joined in. Sites always had "fail/fails at life" in the title.

After the relaunch of ytmnd in 2005, "fail at life" sites continued to pop up. Some of these sites did not have "fail at life" in the title, and others used the "failure" sound clip at the end of another sound clip.

Today, most sites that use the "failure" music are considered to be of poor quality. To reflect this, some ytmnd users have created sites that parody fails at life [1].
