One star (*) can refer to an individual's vote on a site or the overall rating of a site. It is the lowest vote one user can give.

An overall one star rating typically means that the site is terrible for a multitude of reasons or is a rip-off. However, One star is also the vote that downvoters give for most sites, because it is the lowest.

Comments with zero stars infer that the commenter has not yet voted on the site. Sites with zero stars infer that the nobody has voted on the site.

Many YTMND users exclusively vote 1s and 5s while neglecting 2 through 4 stars.

Some user sponsored contests add a twist by awarding prizes to YTMND authors that can get the lowest overall rating of a contest entry.
