The Thwomp fad started as a forced fad by KKM. It was a based off a previous YTMND by Gabu that showed a Thwomp crashing down on a person playing a game of chess. The fad sites he created showed a Thwomp crashing down on various fads. The fad began when some of KKM's Thwomp sites were surprise sites that did not mention Thwomp anywhere in its URL or title. The fad is often one of the most difficult fads to search for since the majority of Thwomp sites are surprise sites.

It is believed that the original audio of "*THWOMP* *Mario dies*" came from the site "How The West Was YTMND". Mainly due to the audio syncup, and the fact that finding the THWOMP noise can be surprisingly difficult.
