Background
I am a third-year student at the University of Texas at Austin. I work part-time in IT, and plan on going to law school. I started on the Internet in 1999 and haven't really stopped.
I started watching YTMND around October 2005 when my roommate started showing me sites like Another girl who doesn't change facial expressions and lol internet. My first site is actually Roffle House: Good Food Fast® since 1955, but I used my roommate's account to do it because I was too lazy to make my own at the time.
Philosophy
Voting
My vote spread is very split for three reasons:
- Voting % for Polend
- Voting 5 for sites that I think are really well-done.
- One incident of mass-downvoting one person who made a racist comment somewhere.
I've since tried to spread the 4's and 3's around, but it'll take a while for it to show up in the totals.
Creating
As a result of sharing an apartment with alholm2000, demsthenes, and jasonmp85, I've come heavily under the influence of the Forgot Poland Army. Basically, I've always enjoyed "destructive" sound and image effects, and the FPA provides me with a venue for having fun with that style.
My first four (five) sites all center on setting new images to reused sounds, but in newer sites I've tried to make different things happen in the sound domain as well. On lol, incoming call, I held my phone's antenna near the microphone wire in my computer so that it would create the exact interference noise I wanted. My Balla da Li / Numa Numa mashup was the result of playing with Audacity during an eight-hour van ride from Kansas to Texas.
Fads
I believe fads are a big (75%) part of what makes YTMND funny -- seeing the same idea run into the ground 30 different ways inevitably brings me a smile. Fads don't stop new ideas from being made or becoming popular, and it takes effort to make any good site.
