The "Byrd"/"Barbaric" fad is based on a speech by Senator Robert Byrd on dog fighting, given in Congress after NFL star Michael Vick was indicted as part of a dogfighting operation in Virginia. During Byrd's speech, he repeated the word "barbaric", to describe the act of "training these poor creatures to turn themselves into fighting machines." The fad started with a site created by Lemonei, which had a picture of Senator Byrd, audio from a section of his speech, and the text: "let that word resound."
